Leek, Queen of the Moorlands.
|
Leek is better known as the Queen of the Moorlands. Leek has got many Antiques shops and many Leek based artists and creative
Leek folk. Leek once was a thriving centre of Mills, with many workers being shipped into Leek to work, but these days,
majority of the Leek based Mills have almost gone and their buildings have been taken over by the many Leek based Antique
dealers and collectors, restorers. Leek is a rather charming little town, with many small unique shops, which make Leek a
great place to visit for a break or an holiday. (especially if you live in the City, its nice to get away)
Leek has its own Football team, called Leek united Football Club, which has several fans and supporters. Leek also has 2
local based Golf courses, with many Leek folk Golf enthusiasts.
Leek also hosts its own Leek Art Festival every year to many visitors fromk around the world who like Leek and the surrounding
Staffordshire Moorlands. Leek plays host to several Arts and Crafts shops which stock many of the pieces by many of the
Leek based artists.
Leek also has 3 main newspapers, being Your Leek Paper, Moorlands Trader and the Leek post and Times. Leek also at certain
times of the year has its own local Leek radio station. Leek also has its own college, Leek College, which is based close
to the center of Leek Town Centre. Leek College offers many great courses for local Leek people and also people from outside
of Leek. Visit the Leek College website for more details. Leek College
also runs its own online bus service called the Leek EBus.
Leek has had a few famous people living in the area, including Famous Artist William Norris who stayed in Leek for a few
years while he learned about Leek's textile industry.
Leek also has a large selection of some fine eating and drinking establishments. These include Cafe Davide of Leek,
Den Engel's of Leek, The Earl Grey Inn of Leek, Cafe Bhujon of Leek, Number 64 of Leek and the Old School tea Rooms of
Churnet Valley.
Leek holds many local events throughout the year, including as already mentioned the Leek arts Festival, which is a fine
event. Leek also from time to time plays host to many carnivals and street parades to commemorate many local Leek historical
events which took place a decade ago.
Leek has a long past, which has been both good and bad. The worst times for Leek were in the first world war and the second
world war, where many Leek men lost their lives fighting on foreign soil. Some Leek men made it back but to only die from
injuries they got from the war. As a result of this, Leek has got its own War Memorial, which is better known as the
Nicholson War Memorial of Leek.
Leek truly is the best place to come and visit and even stay. The best thing about Leek is how close it is to the Roaches
in the Moorlands, this is a wonderful picturesque location, with many great views over the Moorlands and Leek itself. great
for walking, and also right on the doorstep of Leek, so you can easily get back to Leek Town Centre and rest with a nice cup
of Tea from one of Leek's most delightful Coffee and Tea Rooms. Leek is very much famous for these.
James Brindley is also another famous person who had connections with Leek. If he was around now, James would hang out at
Elmo's of Leek, a great night out for all who live in Leek, or are visiting the wonderful historical town of Leek.
