Social scene Feedback
|
I have to agree with some of the comments on here. I lived in Leek all my life until December 2005. I know there are negative things about all towns/cities, etc but Leek was a pretty safe, clean and tidy place to grow up in when I was younger. Now it seems hostile, unfriendly and grim. The loss of the textile industry didn't help as it is now left with no industry or jobs not to mention no infrastructure thanks to that Tory bloke who thought it a good idea to close all the railways.
Stoke's not the best place to live in the UK but I feel safer where I am now. Stoke's got a long way to go but there are small improvements happening gradually. Leek doesn't seem to want to move forward which is a real shame because there is so much untapped potential mainly in tourism.
Nice website by the way. It's got a much more striking appearance than Leek online.

I guess you are right SDK ,the percieved threat is much greater
than the actual threat but I feel much safer in central Manchester than
I do in Leek. Never in Manchester do you get "Wot you lookin' at". Leek
just seems to have more than it's fair share of very agressive drinkers?

In response to Simon Faulkner's comments on 6th March: You can't label Leek just because of a few incidents. I really like
Leek and go there every other Thursday for a drink with friends, I've not yet had any problems. I think your comments were
a bit rash. Incidents occur every minute of every day around the UK, but if we all took your attitude we would all end up
staying in, and never going out due to fear of something which may never happen. Leek is still much safer than most places.
Take Hanley or Newcastle, the amount of fights and emergencies due to nights out there are much higher.

I have to agree with Sk8ter Boy, Leek isn't the best for nightlife. It needs more venues.

I've been to Leek once for one of my friends hen night's. It was cr*p! We ended up going to Hanley instead, and that was
just as violent, Newcastle is still by far the best night out in Staffordshire.

Leek is starting to look a really horrible place. So many murders, don't think I'll be coming to Leek for a while. Its not
safe.

I hear what you say Mark but I feel genuinely frightened when I am
out in Leek of an evening. It may just be my perception but it doesn't
help when folks keep getting murdered!

Leek has now for a long time suffered from only being able to
offer lots of pubs and some good restaurants. Everyone keeps banging on
about The Parkside project, the idea of once again giving Leek a
permanent theatre venue, cinema, local arts house etc.., a lot of set
backs to this project, mainly the destruction by fire of the proposed
venue has meant that we are still no closer to giving leek an extra
arrow in it's social bow, however, is this the answer, It will certainly
bring extra people in to the town, the arty folk's, It would provide the
age group of 3 to 17's a cinema venue, but it will not affect the
thousands of 20 - 40 year old Leek residents who fill the towns many
pubs nightly, these people that I see every week are in the same social
scene as I, the scene that will always remain the most popular for the
majority of Leek's population, "Going Up Town" to get drunk.
Leek has a
social scene, this is it, and nothing more exists in Leek for the night
time social. And if recent trends are to go by, and listening to Leek
people, in Leek's pubs, more and more are starting to move out to the
potteries, Buxton and Macclesfield for a night out, they are all saying
it is safer and has far less of an aggressive attitude in these other
local towns. The introduction of a new chain pub to the town has no
doubt been popular, since opening the Engine Room on the corner of
Market Place and Stockwell Street has been full, mostly all day too,
this happened with the opening of The Red Lion on the market place a
number of years ago, but as with everything else in Leek that is newly
introduced, over time, no more money gets invested in to it, it starts
to look shabby and loses it appeal. What makes Leek? It certainly is not
its social scene; don't even think it is its friendliness any more
either. Leek is stale, we need a BIG change or it will turn in to
Cheadle or Biddulph (no offence, just referring to social scenes) the
suggested merger of S.M.D.C in to S.O.T City Council would not improve
Leek's social scene either, have you scene Stoke these day's. I would be
interested to see any feedback from any other Leek resident regarding
this post. Bye for now, Mark 28, Leekensian (born here too, even that
Hospital has now gone!)
